Saturday marked the first time, SRFC had played a home BCRU match at Magnuson Park. Abbotsford RFC made their way across the border to play 3 matches against Seattle, 2 against the men and 1 against the Seattle Women.
SRFC II’s looked to remain undefeated this half. However, 9 penalties against SRFC in the first half allowed Abbotsford to put 15+ points on the board by the end of the half. Turn overs also hurt Seattle’s ability to mount offensive challenges against a strong Abbotsford side. Penalties and turnovers continued to be Seattle's Achilles heel for the remainder of the game, as Abbotsford pulled away with a commanding lead and the eventual win. The lose wasn’t a complete let down however, Seattle was able to provide some much need games time for a few new players and the relatively new 2nd side (both in experience and time spent playing together) continued to grow more comfortable with each other on the field.
Final Score Abbotsford 42 - Seattle 0
The 1st side took to the pitch against an Abbotsford squad that had yet to be scored on all season by an opponent. Seattle moved the ball effectively as the squad continued to grow more confident playing with each other. Phase play and support was key to putting up a fight against a strong Abbotsford team and that is exactly was the Seattle side brought. Highlights of the game included a great run up to Abbotsford’s try line by Seattle rookie Nate Olson who made a excellent pop pass to his support as he was tackled out of bounds, the pop pass and heads up play resulted in a Seattle try. Fullback Evan Haige put Seattle in the lead with a 60 yard kick for points, forcing Abbotsford to come up with a try in the last quarter of the game. Abbotsford responded with the try and took the win.
